    shoku-and-awe:

The first time I made crispy roasted chickpeas (for the stew), I said to my husband, “Now that I know how easy these are, I’m unstoppable.”

The second time I made them (for a salad topping), I said, “Do you want any more of these to snack on? I might have some more, but I don’t know… Actually, these are so easy I can’t afford not to eat them.”

Honestly? Life-changing snack. Go fuck myself. Wonderful chickpea revolution. Here’s what you do: dry these beans as much as you can (strainer, then paper towels), toss with olive oil and salt, bake on tray at 200c for like 30 minutes, stirring 2~3 times. Sprinkle with delicious spices, or pop directly in mouth.

(Also, the salad dressing is yogurt, tahini, roasted garlic, lemon, and olive oil, blended roughly with a fork and left in the fridge a few hours. It is also delicious.)

Why did I stop making these? Is there something wrong with me?

I’m adding tinned chickpeas to the next shopping list. Beside their snack potential these roasted ones would be a great garnish sprinkled onto something lentil-based like dhal or dhansak.

If you’re feeling anxious or depressed about the climate and want to do something to help right now, from your bed, for free…

Start helping with citizen science projects

What’s a citizen science project? Basically, it’s crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don’t need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can’t participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help

Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.

Post on BlueSky by Rachel Lense is Professionally Curious: I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖ALT

Above image is a pride flag with every color band represented by a NASA image. White is Earth clouds, pink is aurora, blue is the Sun in a specific wavelength, brown is Jupiter clouds, black is the Hubble deep field, red is the top of sprites, orange is a Mars crater, yellow is the surface of Io, green is a lake with algae, blue is Neptune, and purple is the Crab Nebula in a specific wavelength.

    THIS IS SO AMAZINGLY COOL

I’m going maximum clown here. My final theory/prediction/wish for ‘Empire Of Death’.

    Ruby’s mom is Susan Foreman.

Yes, fuck you, I’m going there.

I don’t really have any evidence for this, except that (as insane as it sounds) it just fits right as a dramatic reveal for this whole story-line. The missing family member of our two leads turned out to be the same person, both searching for family without being able to realize it was right in front of them. The Doctor couldn’t realize that not only the anagram, but also the real Susan was right in front of him.

And yes, this very much implies that Ruby is The Doctor’s great granddaughter and also a timeless child.

In the process this breaks the fears from both The Doctor and Ruby. The Doctor isn’t a unique being in the universe, and Ruby doesn’t have to fear being abandoned because this Doctor (unlike past incarnations) would’t leave her without saying a word.

Although in a tragic sense, this means that both wrongly believed their fears did become reality at one point. The Doctor believed he had indeed brought danger into his family as he feared he would as seen in 'Rogue’, and Ruby believed she was abandoned by The Doctor as seen in '73 Yards’.

In the end, the biggest coincidence that the goblins caused in 'The Church On Ruby Road’ wasn’t any of the bad luck, but that their actions lead to two separate family members unknowingly finding each other.

Also, just gonna throw this wild prediction for good measure once more. The companion Varada Sethu is playing is a regenerated Susan, meaning that next season’s Tardis team is literally The Doctor and his family.

I really want a Carole Ann Ford cameo, but I’m not sure she wants one.

Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it’s hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.

LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we’re still contributing to it.

Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

can we talk about how this is even more annoying when websites start forcing AI on us even though we didn’t FUCKING ASK (@ meta)

like, you stole my art. you stole my writing. and now you’re making me fuck up the environment even though i DIDN’T FUCKING ASK

  8. quasi-normalcy:

Hot Take: If they absolutely had to go for an “unknown son” plot in Picard S3, they should have made Vash the mother.

Beverly not telling Jean-Luc that he had a son never made a single lick of sense in terms of her established characterisation. Vash not telling Jean-Luc that he had a son would be absolutely par for the course.

Moreover, Vash also spent several years travelling with Q. So instead of “Jack Crusher” (or whatever his name would be in this version) having weird things going on in his life because of Borg semen, it would be because he might just be part-Q. Or at least because Q might have regarded the child as belonging to him, as much as to Picard or Vash. And this could play into whatever the hell happened to Q in the previous season.

This would have made so much more sense.
